SCOO(U)BA

Filed under: daily ramblings, Animals, Toys — ninsianna @ 9:22 am

I got my iRobot scooba in last night.  We tested it out using just water (no cleaning solution or vinegar).  It’s way louder than I expected.  I’d kinda hoped we could turn the little guy on and just let him run while we entertain ourselves with TV or some such.  Maybe if we put him in the kitchen.Luna doesn’t really seem to care either way about him.  Barley is wary, and Toby is curious and a little intimidated.  It doesn’t help, that twice the scooba coincidentally went straight at Toby.

In other homonymical news…Phlome and I hope to take SCUBA lessons in the next couple months.  We have a cruise in July, and plan to take advantage of one of the SCUBA excursions.  I actually discussed the potential ear issues with an ENT, and he seemed reluctant to discourage me.  He suggested that the worst thing that could happen is a ruptured eardrum, and they usually heal on themselves.  I’d just have to deal with deafness in one ear for a few weeks.  In very rare cases ear drums don’t heal on themselves but minor surgery can correct it.  He seemed quite nonchalant about the idea of ruptured eardrums and deafness with the possibility of surgery.  I figure I’ll just discuss my ear issues with the SCUBA instructor and see if s/he will let me give the SCUBAing a try before I commit to the full class.

So the dead cat count is up to 4 now. This is the first since Toby has entered the fold. Not sure that it was Luna who killed the cat, but she sure guarded it like it was. Didn’t even really want Phlome disposing of it. Though I wouldn’t put it past her claiming Barley’s kill - can’t imagine Barley would care too much. Anyway - so Toby witnessed the art of the kill. Yesterday he proved himself. Brought us a dead baby bird. I’m a little proud of him. Less than 6 months old, and already mastering his hunting skills.

You can get more info about the Dallas exibit here.

I imagine we’ll go sometime after the first of the year. Mid to late January I’m hoping.

Problem Child

Filed under: Animals — ninsianna @ 9:40 am

You know the movie. The one with John Ritter and the little red headed monster, Junior?
I think we may have to start referring to Barley as Junior. The plot of the movie is much like our life lately.
IMDB’s summary:
“Meet Ben and Flo Healy! They want a young child of their own, but Flo is incapable of having a child herself. Enter Junior, a little monster who has been to foster parents’ homes since he was a baby and always made himself get thrown out so one day he goes to the orphanage and causes trouble for the poor nuns (although some of them deserved it). So Ben and Flo go to adopt a child and the administrator, Peabody, cons them into taking Junior off their hands. Junior goes home with the Healys to a nice house which includes a bedroom full of clowns! Ben takes an immediate love to his son, no matter what the horrible things he does, even though he injured his grandfather, a bigoted politician, really turned a birthday party into a “blast”, sicks a bear onto campers on a camping trip, and even goes on a joyride with convicted killer Martin Beck!”

Here’s the plot summary of our lives since Barley:

Meet Ninsi and Phlome. They want a puppy of their own to love and to help keep their already wonderfully well behaved other dog, who sometimes gets lonely when they have to work all day. Enter Barley, a little monster who has been abandoned to the SPCA since he was a baby and never managed to get adopted because of his rambuctiousness. So Phlome & Ninsi go to adopt a puppy and the administrator warns them that the puppy they’ve chosen “is a handfull”. Barley goes home with them to a nice house which includes a wonderfully well behaved dog to play with and a big back yard to run and jump and play in. Phlome and Ninsi take an immediate love to their puppy, no matter what the horrible things he does, even though he destroyed 4 pair of shoes, a new kitchen towel, a 16 foot stuffed snake, a doll ninsi had since she was a little girl, ninsi’s undies and bras, phlome’s socks, and finally 2 of the coushins from their living room couch - oh yeah, and Ninsi’s last pair of tennis shoes. (He’d already eaten the others).

Eric has threatened to euthanize him if he eats the couch again.

Too Much Cuteness

This little girl greeted Phlome this morning as he was trying to leave for work.

We left her some food, water, and a blanket. If she’s still around the house when we get home, a friend from his work is going to adopt her. I think we both would have gladly kept her for ourselves, but we just can’t handle more than 2 dog as it is right now. But OMG she’s just so adorable!

Yesterday we were trying to deicide if we should switch Barley to adult food, for the ease of feeding both dogs the same kind of food. Right now Luna eats Nutro Adult (though she’d be better off with Nutro Large Adult, she just doesn’t seem to like it as well). Barley is eating Science Diet Large Breed Puppy - which is what he started on at the SPCA. In order to avoid switching his food too much, we figured we’d keep him w/ the science diet until we switch him to adult food. That’s pretty much what we were chatting about, when we finally concluded:
(this is pasted from our conversation on MSN)

Phlome So get them both their regular big bag?
Ninsi yes
Phlome alright

Instead Phlome came home with Nutro Large Breed Puppy for Barley and Nutro Large Breed Adult for Luna.

Here let me remind you:
Regular bag for Barley: Science Diet Large Breed Puppy (a large white bag that says Science Diet)
Resulting bag for Barley: Nutro Large Breed Puppy
(a large PINK bag that says Nutro)

Regulalr bag for Luna: Nutro Regular Adult
Resulting bag for Luna: Nutro Large Breed Adult

Now the Luna mix-up I get. The bags are a little similar, and at one time we did get her large breed adult. But WTF with Barley’s food!?
