Capricorn Horoscope for week of December 1, 2005

Free Will Astrology Horoscope

You might want to listen to “Doing the Unstuck,” a song by The Cure. It could prod you to do what you know you should, which is expel yourself forcibly from the rut you’re lodged in. “It’s a perfect day for letting go/ for setting fire to bridges,” the lyrics advise, “for rip-zipping and button-popping/ for dancing like you can’t hear the beat.” Maybe some of you are protesting, “But I want to use logic to think my way out of this jam.” Here’s what I have to say in response: You probably won’t get unstuck with your rational mind alone, which is why you should do irrationally constructive things like singing liberation songs very loudly.

I’m really not sure what they’re trying to say there.

Had our quarterly meeting last night - good times - went to GameWorks in Grapevine. I even played some DDR - I want my own game now so I can practice and kick some teeney bopper @$$ next time I go. *evil grin*

Post T-Day Bulge

Filed under: Weekend Review — ninsianna @ 1:31 pm

Ok - so I survived another thanksgiving. Here are some highpoints (thanks for the inspiration, Hopper).

1. I manged to avoid saying more than 5 words to my mother’s husband (this is a good thing) we pretty much pretended the other didn’t exist - works for me.
2. Ate the requisit turkey, ham, stuffing, potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Avoided the green bean casserole as I do every year.
3. Spent quality time with all members of the family.
4. 95% done with Christmas shopping - the remaining shopping is actualy Phlome/Squids responsibility, but I’ll be helping nonetheless.
5. Drove. Actually I rode, and Phlome drove. Alot.

The dogs got to spend a lot of time outside at my mom’s and lots of free roaming hanging out with other dogs at Phlome’s Mom’s. They both were very good in the car - but were thrilled to be home. This morning Barley was in an especially good mood. Not sure why - but he was running up and down the stairs and hallway this morning. And at least once ran upstairs down the hall, around the bed, jumped on the bed ran around in circles at least 5 times, leaped off the bed down the hall, down stairs and back outside. Then before I left a saw him running around downstairs with his toy dog shaking it vigerously. I think he was just glad to be home where he knows exactly what he’s allowed to chew on, and where he’s allowed to lay. Luna also appears to be greatly enjoying her freedom to go in and out as she pleases - and also enjoying the somewhat cooler weather. Though it’s still warmish out.
Our somewhat newish employee from NY will never believe us now when we say it really does get cold here in TX.

Yesterday we were trying to deicide if we should switch Barley to adult food, for the ease of feeding both dogs the same kind of food. Right now Luna eats Nutro Adult (though she’d be better off with Nutro Large Adult, she just doesn’t seem to like it as well). Barley is eating Science Diet Large Breed Puppy - which is what he started on at the SPCA. In order to avoid switching his food too much, we figured we’d keep him w/ the science diet until we switch him to adult food. That’s pretty much what we were chatting about, when we finally concluded:
(this is pasted from our conversation on MSN)

Phlome So get them both their regular big bag?
Ninsi yes
Phlome alright

Instead Phlome came home with Nutro Large Breed Puppy for Barley and Nutro Large Breed Adult for Luna.

Here let me remind you:
Regular bag for Barley: Science Diet Large Breed Puppy (a large white bag that says Science Diet)
Resulting bag for Barley: Nutro Large Breed Puppy
(a large PINK bag that says Nutro)

Regulalr bag for Luna: Nutro Regular Adult
Resulting bag for Luna: Nutro Large Breed Adult

Now the Luna mix-up I get. The bags are a little similar, and at one time we did get her large breed adult. But WTF with Barley’s food!?

My Review

There appears to be a split amoung Potter fans. Those who were fans of 3, were disappointed in 4 and vice versa. Go here for what I had to say about HP:atPoA right after seeing it.

As you can see I was disappointed in 3 - and therefore by my theory I should have liked 4. And it is so. I laughed and I cried. Yes folks, I nearly bawled my eyes out - both the Cedric tragedy and the tormenting scene where Neville witnesses the effects of the Crutatious Curse (my apologies, I’m too lazy to look up the spelling right now) had me tearing up.
My gut reaction after leaving the movie was that I enjoyed it. Mind you it has been at least a year since I’ve read the book. After some discussion with friends I realized how much was left out. Still yet, the movie was 2.5 hours long. The movie did not leave me feeling unfulfilled. Yes, there are scenes I would have liked to have seen on the big screen, but I understand the time constraints. I think the 3rd movie was cut entirely too much. I do miss Chris Columbus’ work - but face it folks, these ain’t kiddy movies anymore.

So yes, I liked the movie. I’ll have to read the book again of course. And we still need the 2nd and 3rd movies on DVD.

At least they’ve read the book

Ok - so here’s more HP ranting from a very unreliable source. I haven’t seen the movie yet, I can only go by my hopes, the book, and the reviews so far. The reviews of GoF run the whole gammut. So here are a couple that hit both ends of the spectrum. And fortunatly both reviews are also familiar with the books.
Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter raves about the movie.

Owen Gleiberman from Entertainment Weekly appears to feel the film doesn’t do the book justice.

But even those who don’t like the movie, can’t say a bad thing about Brendon Gleeson as Mad Eye Moody.

I can’t wait. I’m hoping I can convince Phlome to take me to the movies after class tomorrow. (that’s right folks, my Monday night class got moved to Sat. morning this week - I’m thrilled, as you can tell).

On the work front, still not much to share. The latest word is that by 12/26 I’ll be off the books here, and on the books in my new dept. Which doesn’t necessarily determine my date of transition. It mainly depends on 2 factors as far as I can tell:
1) When they CAN bring someone else in
2) When they WANT to bring someone else in (as in do they want to have 2 people on the books for 1 week, 2 weeks, or wait until I’m off thier books, and screw my new boss, by having me transition my old job to the new person while being paid by the new dept. - it’s all a bunch of Paul paying Mary and Peter crap)

And by mid Feb I’m supposed to have a big chunk of my main project done, and ready to present to the rest of the training dept. In Vegas. Oh yeah - VEGAS BABY!

I’ll share more as there is more to share.

GoF review

Just read a review of HP-at-GoF. It has me a bit nervous. Here’s the link if you would like to read it yourself.

“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” may not reach the lyrical heights of Alfonso Cuaron’s stylish “Prisoner of Azkaban,”

Ok - do we really need to revisit that piece of crap? Oh lovely - Alfonso is creative. What idiot thought the HP series needed more creativity and someone else’s interpretation? Lyrical heights? WTF - it’s a children’s book. The lyrical heights should be left to Ms. Rowling. She did an excellent job writing the book, the children loved it, and loyal readers wanted to see their book on film, not some old grown up’s artistic interpretation of it.

…this fourth installment, directed by Mike Newell, has a stronger tale to tell. And the storytelling is so assured that its 144-minute running time feels half that—unlike the first two movies, which felt twice as long as they actually were.

If I remember correctly, most fans couldn’t get enough of the movie. I personally didn’t want them to end. But with the third, I was releived when it was over. It was so disappointing, and it felt empty - so much had been left out.

I wish the critics and writers/directors would keep in mind that the HP series is not about artistic interpretation, or award winning plots. They are children’s books translated into children’s movies. The books attracted the attention of older audiences, because they were so well written. Use that to attract a wider audience, don’t try to make it your work of art. It is Rowling’s. And we like it that way.

Go work on your Opus elsewhere. Don’t do it with children’s books.

I thought Chris Columbus was involved in this movie. He did such a great job with the first two, despite what that Newsweek author said. Ignore the critics, listen to the fans.

Good News

Filed under: Weekend Review — ninsianna @ 1:46 pm

Here’s the mini weekend reveiew:
Went to bed too late, got up too early.
Went to reception location, wedding location, found a florist I like and a baker I don’t.
Then mall shopping - though no actuall purchases were made.
Sunday I was in bed by 10 - utterly exhausted.

Then Phlome made me get up out of my wonderfully comfy bed, to go show him how to scroll in all directions in Sims.
He was properly chastised.

But now on to the real reason for this post.
Last Thursday I was offered a position as the central Training Coordinator for the company, contingent upon my current bosses approval. There was also discussion of budget to afford my salary and possibly a raise.
Today I heard the position is officially approved for my salary, but they cannot currently offer me a raise. So basically it is a lateral move. But a move nonetheless. I will no longer be office bitch - and that’s the important part. It will include an expense account, and travel. And possibley *crosses fingers* working remotely. If not all the time, at least part of the time. I will be able to work from home, and I’ll come into the office as they need me. I’m hoping.

You scored as Captain Jack Sparrow. Roguish,quick-witted, and incredibly lucky, Jack Sparrow is a pirate who sometimes ends up being a hero, against his better judgement. Captain Jack looks out for #1, but he can be counted on (usually) to do the right thing. He has an incredibly persuasive tongue, a mind that borders on genius or insanity, and an incredible talent for getting into trouble and getting out of it. Maybe its brains, maybe its genius, or maybe its just plain luck. Or maybe a mixture of all three.

Vet Visit

Filed under: Animals — ninsianna @ 1:40 pm

Yesterday at the vet we learned that Barley has an umbilical hernia. So sometime very soon we have to take him in for the $300 surgery to get that fixed. If it’s not fixed the hernia gets bigger and his intestines and stuff can start getting bundled up in the hernia. No fun.
He also has another ear infection - this time bacterial.
Luna was $3k in one hit (no pun intended). Barley is approaching that amount but in small intervals. We’ll still have to take him back in 6 months for his booster.

Anybody out there know any vets? Is $300 reasonable for a puppy hernia surgery?

VOTE!!!!!

Filed under: To Do — ninsianna @ 11:00 am

Today is election day. I voted early - because the early voting place was closer to my place of work than the regular voting place was to either home or work.

So I’m stealing this shamelessly from Hopper, because she does it so well:

I’d like to remind all the Texans …to Vote NO to Proposition 2 … [TODAY], November 8.

Proposition 2 seeks to ban gay marriage…and further, to eliminate the possibility of any civil union-type arrangements by the state. There’s some discussion of the fact that the wording is vague enough to possibly annul ALL marriages recognized by the state, too, but I wouldn’t count on that loophole to ensure the amendment’s defeat. The only way to fight this bigotry and discrimination is to take yourself to the polls … [TODAY} and VOTE.

Again, if you know your precinct number, you can go here [for Dallas County only] to look up your polling place. If you don’t know your precinct number, you can go here to look it up, along with the names of your state representatives…

…if you live somewhere [other than Dallas County] in Texas, Google is your friend - just search for … “polling locations november 8 [city or county]”. Simple as pie!
